Black River Canal Museum and Warehouse

A growing museum celebrates this record-holding canal that played a significant role in the region’s economic development

The Erie Canal gets much of the glory as the pre-eminent engineering feat of its day, but the Black River Canal holds its own place in history: It still holds the record for most locks on a canal, 109. The 77-mile long canal, which ran uphill as it connected the Erie Canal in Rome to the Black River, gave the North Country access to markets in the East and Midwest.
