Black River Drive-In

It’s tough to beat a summer night and a double feature under the open sky

Much has been made of the demise of the drive-in theatre – but New York, according to the United Drive-In Theatre Owners Association, has the second-highest total of remaining outdoor screens (29). The Black River Drive In, just outside Watertown, sprung back to life in 2006 after lying dormant for about 20 years; originally opened in 1950, it shuttered in the 1980s until a new owner restored and reopened it. In 2012, the theater replaced its vintage 1950s-era projector with a new digital unit, enabling it to continue showing new movies.
