These peaceful waters are the site of an enduring tale

A century ago, Big Moose Lake was the scene of a tragedy that captivated the nation: It was here that a young, pregnant factory worker came with her lover, only to end up drowned. Grace Brown’s body was found a day later. Her boyfriend, the scion of the family that owned the factory, was arrested alone at a nearby resort. Chester Gillette claimed Brown killed herself, diving into the waters; bruises on Brown’s body suggested otherwise. Gillette wound up going to the electric chair. Take a guided tour around the lake in a restored 1955 Chris Craft – named “Grace” – and hear more about the case, and the area’s rich history
