Monument Park

Once meant to honor veterans of the Civil and Spanish American wars, now a monument to many

In 1884, a fire that swept through Carthage was stopped only by the open expanse of this burial ground – resulting in a headline announcing that the town was “Saved by a Graveyard.” The cemetery has since become a focal point of the town; in 1902, a 45-foot-tall granite obelisk was erected there to honor veterans of the Civil and Spanish American wars. Other veterans and conflicts have been recognized with monuments to World War I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm.
