Clayton Island Tours

Why settle for a topside view when you can stare through a glass-bottomed boat?

Anybody can look at the Thousand Islands from the top. Clayton Island Tours’ glassbottomed boat, the Night Heron, gives you a look at the fish and other features of the bed of the St. Lawrence River: perch, sunfish, northern pike and black bass are among the species living there. Other tours include passes by an island that seceded from the Union in 1861 and group “pizza and wings” tours that include a stop in downtown Clayton to pick up, well, pizza and wings.

At a glance
  • The Night Heron runs a trip to the Rock Island Lighthouse, built in 1847 and closed in 1955; it’s the best preserved of the six lighthouses built along the waterway.
  • Tours, which last 1.5 or 3 hours, feature live narration.
  • Fireworks tours available on July 3-4.
