Daffest

Tens of thousands of daffodils mean spring is – finally – here at last

Winter is long in Saranac Lake. This is a place where people used to come precisely because it’s cold, in order to cure tuberculosis by planting themselves outside on chaise longues and breathing in the crisp air. So spring is especially welcome – and this recently created festival revels in it. Since it was started in 2010, more than 80,000 daffodil bulbs have been planted in the community. The annual highlight is a soapbox derby down LaPan Highway giving kids (and adults who can’t quite let go of their youth) a chance to win the Daffest Derby trophy.
